Lisa Hernandez, an award-winning Latina author, will share her work, "Migrations and Other Stories," with Houstonians at three different venues February 26-27, 2008. In the first of a series of monthly features, KUHF's Eric Ladau spoke with Ms. Hernandez.

Lisa Hernandez, an award-winning Latina author, will share her work, Migrations and Other Stories (Arte Público Press, 2007), with Houstonians at three different venues February 26-27, 2008. Migrations is the winner of the Chicano / Latino Literary Prize sponsored by the University of California, Irvine.

Cover of Migrations and Other Stories by Lisa HernandezOn Tuesday, February 26, 2008, Hernandez will be featured at the fifth annual celebration of Hispanic women, La Voz Femenina, taking place this year at Bohemeo’s: Music, Art, Coffee (708 Telephone Road; http://www.bohemeos.com/) at 6:00 pm. Joining Hernandez will be Annette Martinez and Jasminne Rosario, whose work was included in Windows into My World: Latino  Youth Write Their Lives (Piñata Books, 2007), and two young writers from Lee High School, where Hernandez will speak earlier in the day. Presented by Arte Público Press and Voices Breaking Boundaries, La Voz Femenina spotlights the work of poets, writers, dancers, musicians, and artists, who together celebrate the empowerment of women.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, Hernandez will discuss her work at Blue Willow Bookshop (14532 Memorial Drive, 281-497-8675, http://www.bluewillowbookshop.com/) at 7 pm. Following her presentation and reading, Hernandez will be available to autograph copies of Migrations and Other Stories.

Lisa Hernandez is a native of Pasadena, California, where she lives with her husband and daughter. She teaches English at Los Angeles Community College and coordinates literacy programs for the Los Angeles Unified School District.  Migrations and Other Stories is her first published book.
